South African chemicals group Sasol’s International Chemicals business is investing Euro 60-mn at its Brunsbüttel site in Germany to expand production of spherical alumina supports for advanced catalyst systems and other high-value applications. The project will debottleneck and expand the company's existing Advanced Materials alumina asset base at the site.
All construction approvals have been secured and procurement is under way, with selection of a general contractor expected in June. Beneficial operation is targeted around 2029.
“This investment is about scaling and sharpening the capabilities that differentiate Sasol in advanced materials and speciality chemicals,” said Mr. Stefan Maedje, head of Advanced Materials for Sasol’s International Chemicals business. “By expanding our advanced alumina production and enhancing process performance, we are reinforcing our role as a reliable, technology‑driven partner for customers in critical applications where performance and continuity of supply are non‑negotiable.”
The project incorporates energy optimisation and process improvements expected to reduce the product carbon footprint by up to 15% per tonne against the existing baseline.
