Diversified German conglomerate, Henkel, has achieved carbon-neutral production at its Adhesive Technologies manufacturing site at Kurkumbh, Pune, eliminating both Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to approximately 11,300-tonnes of CO₂ per annum.
Carbon-neutral operations at Kurkumbh were achieved by replacing furnace oil-based thermic fluid heaters with high-efficiency electric systems, removing all fossil fuel use from the site. The transformation involved optimising heat loads, installing advanced heat exchangers, and upgrading electrical capacity to support full electrification. The site is now powered entirely by renewable electricity.
Henkel has simultaneously achieved a parallel milestone at its Gebkim plant in Türkiye, where a natural gas-fired boiler was replaced with a high-efficiency electric boiler system, eliminating Scope 1 emissions and delivering an annual reduction of approximately 956-tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. The achievements at both sites are significant contributors to the company's target to decarbonise its Adhesive Technologies operations by 2030.
Mr. Simon Ulmann, VP Supply Chain & Operations IMEA, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said the company is systematically eliminating fossil fuels from all its operations and replacing them with electrified processes powered by renewable energy, and that the milestones at Kurkumbh and Gebkim demonstrate how strategy can be translated into tangible impact at site level.
Mr. Bappa Bandyopadhyay, Director Operations & Projects India, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said the Kurkumbh milestone underscores the company's commitment to sustainable growth and responsible manufacturing, and demonstrates that sustainability and business performance can advance together to create long-term value.
