Aditya Birla Group firm, Grasim Industries, has announced the commencement of commercial production at its ‘Birla Opus’ paints plant located at Mahad (Maharashtra) on 4 March 2025.
The Mahad unit has installed capacities for water-based paints of 180-million litres per annum (mlpa), distemper of 20-mlpa and solvent-based paints of 30-mlpa. The company informed that the resin manufacturing block at Mahad has not yet been commissioned and the resin “is being sourced from Birla Opus’s other plants to manufacture solvent based paints”.
With the addition of the230-mlpa capacity at Mahad, the total installed capacity of decorative paints under the Birla Opus brand has reached 1,096-mlpa, the company said in a stock exchange filing. Five of the company’s six greenfield plants have now commenced commercial production.
Birla Opus was launched in 2024 with Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla projecting the business to achieve revenue of Rs. 10,000-crore within the first three years of full-scale operations.
The total upfront investment for the project is Rs 10,000-crore. The sixth plant at Kharagpur near Kolkata is under construction.
