Mumbai-based Godrej Chemicals has launched SLNOVA, a proprietary biosurfactant platform based on sophorolipids and developed from renewable feedstocks using fermentation technology.
The company said SLNOVA combines performance derived from biotechnology with mildness, sustainability, and multifunctionality, opening up formulation possibilities across personal care, home care, and industrial cleaning, among other segments. It is a readily biodegradable surfactant designed to perform multiple roles within a formulation, including emulsification, wetting, dispersing, and solubilisation, and is available in two platform variants catering to applications ranging from mild personal care products to demanding industrial cleaning systems.
Godrej Chemicals said the launch was backed by a multidisciplinary team of scientists and advanced laboratory facilities, reflecting its continued investment in biotechnology-led innovation as the surfactant industry moves increasingly toward bio-based and biotechnology-driven solutions.
Mr. Vishal Sharma, Executive Director and CEO, Godrej Industries (Chemicals), said the surfactant industry was entering a transformative phase driven by evolving customer expectations and advances in biotechnology, and that the opportunity lay not just in creating better ingredients but in rethinking how they are developed.
“We see biotechnology as a key enabler of the next generation of specialty chemicals, bringing together performance, sustainability, and innovation. As the first company in India to produce sophorolipids at commercial scale, Godrej Chemicals is helping shape a new chapter in biosurfactant innovation. Powered by locally sourced renewable raw materials and our manufacturing expertise, we are building a more reliable, scalable biosurfactant supply ecosystem laying the foundation for our next chapter of innovation in this space,” he added.
